“The way I see it, the role of my software is to guide our colleagues from the research and service teams to find technology solutions for their needs.”

Ania Niewielska is a Lead Software Engineer in the Software Development and Operations team, part of the Technical Services Cluster, and her role is to make sure that the EMBL-EBI teams can request access to the technology they need to do their job well.

What is your professional background?

I studied computer science at the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice, in Poland. I then spent over ten years developing software solutions for banking. I’ve always had an interest in the life sciences; in fact, for a while I wanted to study medicine, but I never ended up doing it.

What do you do at EMBL-EBI?

I’ve been working on a number of different projects since I started. I’m currently in charge of the Resource Usage Portal (RUP), which helps internal teams get the technical resources they need for their projects. This covers requesting virtual machines, databases and the cloud and inspecting the usage of compute clusters and storage.

What I enjoy about the project is that it’s an opportunity to learn what infrastructure we, the Technical Services, offer to our users! I also get the chance to work with the users, ask them questions, and draw out what problems they really need to solve, then find the best tech solutions for these problems.

The way I see it, the role of my software is to guide our colleagues from the research and service teams to find technology solutions for their needs, without them having to know in advance which team of Technical Services will provide it.

What do you like most about your work at EMBL-EBI?

I like lots of things, but after being stuck at home for almost one and a half years during the pandemic, the first thing that comes to mind is the campus. It’s a safe space and a great environment to exchange ideas. I didn’t realise how much I missed it until I returned to the office after working from home during the pandemic.
